6 Principles of Raging Sustainably

Just because we like to have fun, doesn't mean the environment needs to get trashed.

1. Close trash can lids #CloseTheLid
2. Use trash cans that are not overflowing #WalkTheExtraBlock

3. Dispose of cigarette butts properly #GetYourButtOffTheBeach
4. Use reusable cups at parties #BYOCup
5. Properly dispose of to-go containers #KnowWhereItGoes
6. Volunteer at Adopt-A-Block or with another Partner #AdoptABlock

#1. Close trash can lids #closethelid
I know you're thinking, "I live a pretty sustainable life - I separate my recycling, always put my trash in the waste bin, and pick up the rogue plastic bag from time to time." And that's awesome, bro! But did you remember to fasten the trash can lid? It turns out not putting a lid on your waste bin is one of the easiest ways for trash to make its way onto the streets and into the ocean in Isla Vista. Seagulls, squirrels, and raccoons will do anything to get their beaks, claws, and hands on your trash and spread it all down the block. In addition to your leftover hamburger, these critters end up eating plastic, glass, metal, and who knows what else. That's not chill. They need your help to live a long a healthy life, and we need your help to keep Isla Vista clean and beautiful. #closethelid
#2. Use trash cans that are not overflowing #walktheextrablock
It's morning. Last night's rager has come to an end, and now you've got to think about clean-up. It may be convenient to try and cram everything into that tiny brown trash bin in the driveway but this is not the sustainable way. Overflowing trash cans make it easy for solo cups and beer cans to spill out onto your driveway, into the streets, and eventually into the ocean. This makes your home and our IV community look trashy. It takes a few extra minutes to #walktheextrablock to the nearest dumpster to dispose of your excess trash. If your trash is often overflowing, ask your landlord for more bins or click here to report excess trash to the IV Community Services District.
#3. Dispose of cigarette butts properly #getyourbuttoffthebeach / #stinkybutts
Do you smoke, bro? That sucks, but whatever to each their own! If you are a smoker, you need to make sure that you dispose of your butt properly. Cigarette butts have been the single most collected item on world's beaches, with a total of over 60 million collected over 32 years of beach clean ups. That's nasty! Cigarette butts can get into the ocean and onto the beach through storm drains, so even if we aren't smoking directly next to the beach, we need to make sure that our butts are thrown away and not left on a sidewalk. This is especially important in Isla Vista where the sidewalks are so close to the coast. Pick up your damn butts, my friends!
#4. Use reusable or compostable cups at parties #BYOcup
You're going party to party and then it happens...they're out of cups!! What a bummer...should have #BYOcup!  Not only can not having a cup be a buzz kill, but using all those cups is wasteful, leaves you open to getting your cup swiped, or drinking from a nasty cup.  When throwing a party, encourage friends to bring their own cup or supply compostable cups for those friends you know are slacking.  Compostable cups are sold at IV Food Co-op, just make sure to send them to compost!  Rage Sustainably certified party games include Snappa, Kings Cup, Beer Die, and 7/11 Doubles. These can be played with your own cup, dice, and cards!
#5. Properly dispose of to-go containers #knowwhereitgoes
Inevitably, you're going to get hungry after a night of raging. Food options are aplenty in IV, but what do you do with that container after your late night grubbing? #KnowWhereItGoes! You can support Surfrider's ocean friendly restaurants, ask how to dispose of your container when you pick it up, or check the label!! Here's a help link to the containers in IV and what they mean! You can also eat in to prevent to-go container trash or just tell them you can do without the extra plastic bag. Most importantly, when you're finished with your late night snack just make sure it doesn't end up on the street...you're hook up won't be impressed with your litter.
#6. Volunteer at Adopt-A-Block or with another Partner #AdoptABlock / #Surfrider
Oh man what a bummer! Raging too hard and now you have community service?  Need to finish those mandatory volunteer hours you've been neglecting? Wanna just give back to your community or party in a more beautiful place? Get all the good feels and clean up your community by volunteering! Adopt-A-Block has lots of events where you can meet people, clean up the community, and check off those hours or build up experience. In addition, Adopt-A-Block has partnered with Surfrider so that you can earn 1 community service hour for every 75 cigarette butts picked up!

It's better to Rage in a beautiful place
